Note that this is not a problem caused by Eudora or other email programs, but rather is caused by Netscape. For more details, see OpenNetscape!

For Macintosh:

Eudora: Most of you will not have to do anything special with Eudora.

Claris Emailer users should download SetNetscapeMailtoPref from Emailer utilities page. Use this script instead of Override Netscape Mailto where indicated below.

Netscape: You will need to tell Netscape to use Eudora for mailtos.
NOTE: Some people have complained that setting Eudora as the mailto: helper has broken parts of the Netscape (full-install) news reader.

  • For Netscape 3.x and Netscape Communicator 4.x (full install, not standalone):
    1. To create the STR resource, see the Netscape Prefs STR Patch page or download a Fixed Netscape preferences file
    2. To store Eudora as a helper application, download and run Override Netscape Mailto (unless you are using Eudora mailto Helper for Eudora Light 1.x or Pro 2.x; see above)
  • For Netscape Navigator 4.0x (stand-alone browser):
  • You can also add this functionality without InternetConfig. Under "Preferences:Applications", click "New" and put "mailto:" in all three fields. Select Eudora as the application and save.
  • To reset Netscape to do its own mailto, download and run Reset Netscape
  • Or try NetscapePlusAlpha lets you set/override Netscape Navigator/Communicator's URL helper settings (i.e. set mailto to go to the email program of your choice, news to go to the newsreader of your choice, etc.)

    Windows:

Ken Simler describes this well. See Use Eudora with Netscape.
