The trick is to use the tge-tcp tool, available from info-mac, directory comm/ctb. This tool allows CTB applications like Eudora to connect to other hosts via telnet. So that's easy. Now comes the tricky part: Getting Eudora to work with the UNIX host:
You need to compile "srialpop", which is in the Extras/Dialup folder in your Eudora folder on your UNIX host. If you compile it on Solaris send me the Makefile and any changes you made, since I could only compile it on IRIX6. Then put the file "Direct Unix Navs" from the Dialup folder to your preferences or Eudora Settings folder. Either will work. Edit the NAVIGATE IN str-resource to fit your needs (you'll probably have to change the prompt in the last line from % to whatever your shell uses).
Important: Since I suppose your Username and password on the UNIX host are different from your POP account you need to change the lower case \u in the second line and the lower case \p in the third line to UPPERCASE. This is a placeholder for the dialup username/password.
Now, try to check mail. It will probably stop at the point where Eudora tells the POP server USER username. At least it did that for me. This is because Eudora send CR/LF, not just LF. Change Resource 6000, String 17 IN THE EUDORA APP (or copy the whole resource to your Direct UNIX Navs file and change it there) to only the square, i.e. delete the carriage return. That should do it. Launch Eudora, check mail and enjoy the freedom of being able to use Eudora behind a firewall (and sending unencrypted passwords over the net....)
