These are the Settings that must be filled in to operate Eudora. Most other things can be left blank or as their default. Most of these settings can also be imported from Internet Config (simply check the "Read from Internet Config" in the Miscellaneous pane of the Eudora Settings dialog and restart Eudora).
If you have another email client working, you can open its Settings file to see what is entered there. Most information will be the same (you simply have to know where to enter it in Eudora).
To get to this Settings dialog, simply start Eudora (if this is your first time to ever run Eudora on the computer) or select "Settings" from the "Special" menu.
Note: Most of this information is for Eudora for the Macintosh. A lot of information, such as POP account information, is also relevant to the Windows version of Eudora. Unless otherwise noted, this information is relevant to both Eudora Light and Eudora Pro.
Screen shots are from Eudora Pro v4.0.1/Mac. There are some differences between this version and previous versions. Users of previous versions should refer to setup.html.
I highly turning on balloon help to figure out what all of the little buttons and fields are for in your Eudora Settings.
Getting Started
1. Real Name:
Fill in your real name. There is no special formatting to this at all. I suggest using the accepted English format of "First_Name Last_Name" (see example).
2. Username:
The username that your ISP assigns you. Typically this is the same as your "log in" name. Also typically the part of your email address BEFORE the "at" sign @. If that does not work, call up your ISP and ask what your "POP account" is. Enter that here (everything before the at sign).
3. Mail Host:
Typically, but not always, the part of your email address AFTER the "at" sign @. If this does not work, call up your ISP and ask them what their "POP server" is. Enter that here. The POP server is used for you to RECEIVE mail.
Hosts
1. Mail:
Your POP server. Also found in the "Getting Started" pane above (#3).
2. SMTP:
Your SMTP server. SMTP stands for "Simple Mail Transfer Protocol". Sometimes this is the same as your mail server and sometimes it is different. Ask your ISP. The SMTP server is used for you to SEND mmessages (as opposed to the POP server).
3. Directory Services:
This field can actually be left blank. This host is used to do Ph searches (select "Directory Services" from the "Window" menu). Also see Ph
4. Finger:
This field can also be left empty. This server is used to complete "Finger" searches (select "Directory Services" from the "Window" menu). Also see Finger
Checking Mail
1. Username:
Should be filled in from when you filled in the "Getting Started" dialog
2. Mailhost:
Should be filled in from when you filled in the "Getting Started" dialog
Sending Mail
1. Return Address:
The address people to which people send their email. Sometimes, but not always, the same as your POP account.
2. SMTP Server:
Should be filled in from earlier.
Composing Mail
1. Return Address:
Should be filled in from earlier.
2. Domain to add to unqualified names:
Can be left blank. (Used if you want to send to joe@isp.net and jane@isp.net a lot. You can simply enter "isp.net" here and when you send mail to "joe" and "jane" they get to the correct people. But be warned: if you just enter "Jerry" and forget that you don't have a nickname defined for jerry@elsewhere.com, jerry@isp.net will get your message if you aren't careful.)
3. Keep copies of outgoing mail:
Should be checked if you want to keep a copy of messages you send in the Out mailbox, or filtered to another mailbox, after you send them. If this box is not checked, messages are deleted from the Out mailbox after they are sent.
