Directory Widget
Q: What is LDAP and what is the Directory Widget?
A: LDAP stands for "Lightweight Directory Access Protocol." For use of the Directory Widget, however, don't worry about the technical name. The Directory Widget lets you look up people at various academic, government, and research institutions to find their e-mail address (and/or their postal address, phone, web site, etc.)
Q: How do I use the Widget?
A: See the Help file (which is the standard instructions, although hard to distinguish between Help and FAQ)
Q: Is there a discussion forum for the Directory Widget?
A: Yes. emailman.software.directory.widget can be accessed via web, newsgroup (nntp) or RSS/Atom.
Q: My campus/employer/research institute doesn't have an LDAP server. What do I do?
A: Suggest it to them. If they want advice on implementation, please have them contact me.
Q: I keep trying different permutations of ldap.mycollege.edu and can't find the right one. What do I do?
A: Ask your campus (or IT Dept., etc.) if they have an LDAP server. Over the years I've seen people try all sorts of things rather than just ask.
Q: Joe Blow isn't listed on the LDAP server but I know he is at Acme University?
A: Try other common names to ensure that the widget is connecting to the University. If so, perhaps Joe Blow is either unlisted or has moved on to another university. Ask Joe Blow. (But by all means post to the emailman.software.directory.widget discussion forum if you really think there is a bug.
Q: Can you make a custom version of the Widget?
A: Please Contact me to discuss. Possibilities include, but are not limited to, custom co-branding with your school/business name/logo/color, limiting the widget to one server, a Windows Vista Sidebar or Live gadget, etc.
Q: Can you access LDAP servers that require authentication or VPN?
A: Authentication is not supported at this time. VPN -- if just being hooked into your VPN is enough to allow Directory Widget to work, then it should work. Let me know -- I'll also try to find someone who can test this.
Q: A server is listed, but does not work.
A: Please Contact me or post to the emailman.software.directory.widget discussion forum. It is possible that the server is accessible only to those on that campus or connected via VPN. I'm going to try to flag such entries.
Q: Can I submit another LDAP server to be added for future downloads of the software?
A: Yes -- when you add a server, make sure the "submit to eMailman(r)" box is checked. Or you can Contact me
Q: I know I agreed to the license before I downloaded the Directory Widget, but where is the license again?
A: License is here
Q: Can I donate money?
A: Donation page is here
