Directory Widget
Options:
Help/instructions: (please click on images that are too small to read for full-sized versions)
Installing the widget:
Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger is required. If you're using Safari, click the I accept link at the bottom of the license to begin the download. When the widget download is complete, show Dashboard, click the Plus sign (see image to right)
to display the Widget Bar and click the widget's icon in the Widget Bar to open it. If you're using a browser other than Safari, click the I accept link at the bottom of the license to begin the download. When the widget download is complete, unarchive it and place it in /Library/Widgets/ in your home folder. show Dashboard, click the Plus sign (see image to right) to display the Widget Bar and click the widget's icon in the Widget Bar to open it.
Additional installation notes:
With regard to the instructions above for browsers other than Safari: Note that you can place the widget either in /Library/Widgets/ to make it available to all users on the Mac or in ~/Library/Widgets/ (for the user that is currently logged in).
A double click of the widget in the Finder will automatically install it in ~/Library/Widgets/ and open it in Dashboard.
You can also have two or more "instances" of the Directory Widget running in Dashboard. Thus, for example, you could leave one instance of the Directory Widget on your preferred server but use the second instance to switch between other servers. Or you could have two instances set to particular servers and a third to look up people at various other places, etc. To add additional instances, open the Dashboard and click on the "+" (see image to right)
in the lower right hand corner. Scroll through the list of widgets until you see the "Directory" widget listed with its icon above (click here for image). Click on the icon and an additional instance will be added. You can keep clicking on the icon multiple times to add more instances. NOTE: Re-installing the widget or installing an updated version of the widget closes all instances of the widget.
Using the widget:
Click on dashboard and look for a logo like the one on the upper left of this page or for something like the image to the right:
If the last time you used the widget you left the widget on the reverse (purple screen), it will instead look like this image (click image for larger version):
Either way, click on this widget.
Choosing what server to access:
Click on the "i" in the lower right of the widget (assuming you are on the front -- or green -- side of the widget).
Click in the Server Name field and scroll through the list until you find the one you want, and click "Done." See example here
If you don't see the server you want, and you know that a particular LDAP server exists, start typing the name (the common name, not the server name, i.e. "Acme University") in the Name Field and hit enter. Then fill in the server name, port number and base object. See example here. I hope you will either check or leave checked "Submit to eMailman(r)" so that others may access that server. Click "Done" and the widget will flip back to the front (green) side. (Currently, the widget will not resubmit an entry if you make changes; if you make changes to an entry that you have submitted, please contact me via the link above. Thanks!)
Note: Re-installing the widget or installing an updated version of the widget does not delete the serveres you have added.
Note: Servers marked with an "*" are available "on-campus" or via authentication only.
Note: The "!" in the image to the right indicates that "ldap.example.edu" can't be found. see example here
Deleting a user-added server:
Select the server you have added and click on the minus sign in a circle to the right of the server selection area. You will then get a request to confirm that you wish to delete the server. See image to right
If you know that a pre-set server has gone bad or may only be available on campus but isn't marked with an asterisk to indicate such (remember, it may be good on that campus, but not available to the internet as a whole), please let me know.
Looking up an entry:
After choosing/adding a server, you will be returned to the front (green) side of the widget. Type either a single name (presumably a last name, but I suppose a first name would do, although that would be silly) or a first and last name, and hit enter. You can even use partial names on some servers:
Examples:
- starr
- smith
- andrew
- andrew starr
- and sta [depends on the server allowing for such searches]
- a starr
Note that wildcards ("*") can be used:
- For example: "st*rr*" will look for any name (first, last, whole name, etc.) that contains "st" followed by other characters followed by "rr" and followed by other characters.
- So "st*rr*" doesn't just find last names of "Starrett" but also finds "Stacy Torres"
- But note that "st*rr" would not find "Stacy Torres" because there is no wildcard ("*") after the "rr" in the search term. "Stephen Carr," however, would be found. ("st" followed by any characters, followed by "rr")
Advanced users:
- Hover the cursor around the search field to see the LDAP search that is being submitted.
- Actually, if you just type a name without wildcards, wildcards are automatically added. For example, "starr" should find people named Starrett.
- If, however, you put a wildcard (*) in your search, the leading and trailing wildcards are no longer automatically submitted.
Using results:
After getting results, you can:
- You can alternate between full record being displayed or just e-mail addresses (in the example above, e-mail addresses only are displayed; clicking on the "Full" button would give full records for each entry, as returned by the server).
- Click on an e-mail address or web site and be taken to your e-mail program or to the web page
- Copy the results: Either click "copy all" or select some text and click the "copy" button (the button changes from "copy all" to "copy" if text is selected) to only copy the selected text.
- Click in the search window and modify your search or do a new search.
