- MailSteward by pubblog.com for Mac OS X. Will archive your mail.app mail into a relational database, import most mbox format (Eudora, Entourage and other) mail files, and will work with POP, IMAP, and .mac folders stored locally in mail.app.
- Magellan by MAKI supports multiple POP accounts and works well with various languages/alphabets. (Japanese version)

- Balzac "is a new email application for OS X 10.3 and above, which aims to provide a simple view on your mail whilst allowing fast, sophisticated searches of past correspondence. - Entourage 2004 and Entourage X from Microsoft do mail (POP and IMAP) and news (NNTP)
- Eudora by Qualcomm (POP3/IMAP4)
- GNUMail.app "is a clone of NeXT/Apple's excellent Mail.app application. It uses the GNUstep development framework or Apple Cocoa, which is based on the OpenStep specification provided by NeXT, Inc.. GNUMail.app is licensed under the GPL, and the full sources of the application are available."
- GyazMail "is developed from scratch to be simple, easy-to-use e-mail client with many features, based on Cocoa framework."
- Hogwasher by Asar, Inc. is an e-mail and a news client.
- MacSOUP by Stefan Haller is an e-mail and a news client.

- emila by Steven Frank "is an indexing and search tool for your email. It creates a master database of your existing email, and lets you perform various kinds of searching and filtering on that database."
- HTTP Mail Plugin lets you retrieve Hotmail mail in mail.app.
- MacOSX Cocktail " is a general purpose utility for Mac OS X 10.2 or later. The application serves up a scrumptious mix of maintenance tools and interface tweaks, all accessible via a comprehensive graphical interface and toolset. - MailPriority by David Frank. "Add message priorities, message coloring and
return receipts to Mail.app."
- Mail Scripts for Mail.App. For now, it has "Create Rule" and "Change SMTP Server" scripts.
- Mail Fix by Switched On Software solves a problem Mail.app has with some SMTP servers rejecting messages.

- ItŐs Your Mail. "Just as you can fine-tune Mac OS X, you can customize Mail to work the way you do." QuickTime video on Mail.app
- Email filtering. How to use fetchmail, procmail, and unix underpinnings of OS X to filter out spam more effectively for mail.app users. Requires some comfort with unix, but don't need to be an expert.
- GPGMail for Apple's OS X Mail client.
- SpamCop send automates the SpamCop reporting process from mail.app
- Mailsmith by Bare Bones Software
- Mozilla (and Netscape) products:
- SeaMonkey is a web broswer, mail and news client, and HTML editor (replaces the "Mozilla Suite")
- Thunderbird from the Mozilla team is a mail and news client for OS X, Windows, and Linux.

- The Netscape Unofficial FAQ covers all of the above products as well as Firefox browser from Mozilla (although to be honest, I don't see a "SeaMonkey" section)
- Mulberry (open source) by Cyrus Daboo does multiple accounts, POP3/IMAP4/SMTP and PGP support. Also has Windows/Linux/Solaris versions. Also available is the Mulberry Administrator's Toolkit for Mac/Windows, implementing the IMSP and ACAP protocols.
- Musashi comes in English or Japanese versions.
- Odysseus from Infinity Data Systems aims to be a replacement for Eudora.
- Outlook Express by Microsoft
- Penelope from Qualcomm/Mozilla: "Qualcomm's intention with the Penelope project is to join the Eudora user experience with the Mozilla platform. We intend to produce a version of Eudora that is open source and based on Mozilla and Thunderbird. It's not our intention to compete with Thunderbird; rather, we want to complement it.
Qualcomm is committed to both preserving the Eudora user experience and to maintaining maximum compatibility, for both developers and users, with Thunderbird. It is our goal to build a single development community around Thunderbird and Eudora, so that both mailers advance faster than they previously have."
