Note that most of the following are not really web servers, but applications that interface between email servers and web servers so that people can view mail with their web browsers.
Definitions:
- POP/IMAP access means that one can use POP/IMAP client to retrieve mail from the service.
- Remote POP/IMAP means that one can use the service to retrieve mail from other POP/IMAP boxes/accounts.
- If anyone has better terms for the above, let me know, but as I go through the below I will differentiate which ones have either or both of the above.
Web-mail utilities: (for installation with a web-mail server. for web-mail utilities for end users, such as web-to-pop gateways, etc., see web-mail utilities)
- AutoSpell from CompuBridge. OEM for Windows or Web. Also free for web sites to include for their site.
- e-Too by Corel. "Webmail enhancement application that lets users compose messages with the richness of HTML. Now users can get as creative as they want; they can express themselves with rich-text formatting and graphical emoticons, create quick doodles or signatures, drop in sticky notes, and even insert maps, stock quotes and weather forecasts directly into their Webmail messages."
- JSpell by The Solution Cafe, Inc. " enables spell checking inside of Java applets and applications, as well spell checking HTML form contents. The spell check is a client server process. We have source code available."
- NetAuth by NetWin is a multiplatform CGI which allows users to create new accounts on a mail system, and an administrator to manage accounts, change passwords, etc.
- Spellchecker.net provides tools for web-based systems to allow users to spellcheck their work.
- we:search "is a specialized news/mail search engine designed to be able to handle tens of millions of messages. It can add new messages to its index in real time, which makes it ideal for providing up-to-the second search results for a news spool. If you have a large data set, you'll need much disk and RAM for we:search to be able to give satisfactory results."

- BrowserExpress by Progressive Software Solutions, for NT, Linux, and Unix, allows users to check their existing remote POP3 mail accounts and to send mail using the return address for that account. Has support for attachments and integrated LDAP functionality. Allows you to easily brand the pages with your logo.
- CommuniGate Pro by Stalker Software, for Mac OS X Server, Windows, Unix/Linux.
- DMailWeb by NetWin works with POP3/SMTP mail servers. MacOSX, Win, Unix/Linux.
- EMU Webmail by EmuMail can check remote POP or IMAP accounts and runs on Unix, Mac, and Windows NT.
- EMU Alacer by EmuMail supports remote POP and runs on Unix, Mac, and Windows 98/NT.
- 4dWebMail by 4D for Mac or Windows
- iMate Web Mail Server by imate.Net corporation for Win or Linux. "This program is making it easier to use for intranet system without the need for a full-fledged system administrator. imate version 3.5 includes POP3, Slide Mail, Multiple Domain (Virtual Host) and Mobile. Imate program is a web mail solution which has included the various of powerful functions such as e-mail, message board, e-mail filtering, blocking spam mail, and other components as plug-in type. Interface languages: Korean, English, Polish, Spanish(Mexico), Japanese, French, Chinese (Traditional, Simplified), Portuguese(Brazil), German, Italian, Indonesian." - Inframail by Infradig for Windows or Unix is a mail server (POP, IMAP, web-mail, mailing lists) and news server.
- Kerio MailServer by Kerio. IMAP/Web/WAP. Collects from remote POP servers (but I don't think it allows POP access itself?). Antivirus and antispam features. Allows shared folders to share messages with colleagues. Windows or Linux versions.
- MailMail for NT/Solaris (source code can be made available) allows webmail and POP3 access and many other features.
- MailNow for Windows/Unix (POP3) provides unlimited addresses for multiple domains using just a single catchall POP account per domain
- MailSpinner NT/Unix by Nascent. Supports retrieval of POP3/IMAP4 mail from your usual mail server, as well as SMTP/LDAP/MIME.
- M-Store by MessagingDirect is a robust message server that delivers exceptional scalability,
performance, and ease of operation. Features include a centrally managed,
highly scalable universal message store accessible via IMAP4, POP3 or the web.
Messages can be simultaneously accessed from several external processes.
Administration is performed locally, or remotely via a fully secure web
administration tool. M-Store is currently available for Red Hat 6.0 Linux, IRIX - 6.5,
Solaris 2.5.1 and Solaris 2.7, & AIX 4.2

- N-Plex WebExpress by Critical Path, NT and Unix.
- NullMailer by Bruce Guenter "a sendmail/qmail/etc replacement MTA for hosts which
relay to a fixed set of smart relays. It is designed to be simple to
configure, secure, and easily extendable."
- Post.Office by Software.com. Unix/NT. POP3/SMTP/Web. (see also WebEdge below which enhances Post.Office to offer a more branded web-mail experience).
- RecipeMail from RecipeXperience. Does webmail with Windows-style interface, also has a POP/SMTP component so you can use your existing client. Linux/Windows.
- Sake Mail by Endymion works with your web and mail servers to provide access to your POP/IMAP/SMTP servers either to web browsers or WAP devices.
- WebEdge by Software.com for use with their Post.Office server can be used for corporate mail and also is well-suited for those wanted to offer branded webmail (i.e. for site visitors). NT and Unix.
- XWebMail by X and Mail. NT and Unix/Linux.
- Java:
- JWMA "is a WebMail implementation in Java, enabling the user to access, manage and compose email using a standard web browser."
- KBmail "was designed for sole purpose of providing a ultimate Web-based interface (you can call gateway!) for Internet Service Providers or other email service providers to deploy their mail servers, both POP3 and IMAP4, yeah, IMAP4 as well!" also has spam filtering and LDAP.
- MochaMail Pro does web-mail with ability to check remote POP3/IMAP4 accounts, whereas MochaMail Lite is a free web-mail server that has ability to check pop accounts.
- MuMail "is a Java applet designed to let you read your mail from your home page. So you can read your mail when there is no mail reader available, or if you don't want to change the configuration of someone else's mail reader. All you need is a Java 1.1 compliant Web browser."
- WebMail is a www-frontend to IMAP/POP3 mailboxes.
- Perl
- @mail Supports web/POP/IMAP. "Written in Perl and including full source code, @Mail is a powerful and readily customized Webmail server. Available for Windows and most Unix/Linux flavours and in many different languages including German, Arabic, Spanish, Italian and more."

- Foodora lets you read and delete your POP mail via a browser. Source downloadable. The beta allows you to reply and compose mail.
- Mailman by Endymion comes in Standard or Professional versions, and supports even minimalist text browsers such as Lynx or those found on PDAs/phones. The Standard version is just a viewer of the POP account, whereas the Professional version stores/organizes messages, has an address book, and allows the user to store their preferences, while still having the option to leave messages on the POP server.
- Monorail "is an integrated web-based interface to services such as email and newsgroups, with additional services such as an address book and planner."
- NeoMail By Ernie "Neo" Miller (Sourceforge) is a web-based mail client that allows users to access their mail spools and send messages. It does not require a POP3 server, or any shell access for the users. It interfaces directly with user mail spools.
- QD-Pop from UC-Davis
- W3mail "is a full featured webmail application that meets the e-mail needs of today's businesses and other organizations. By setting up W3Mail on your website, your e-mail users can access their POP3 mail from anywhere in the world, as long as they have access to a web browser. Your users can access e-mail normally accessible only from the office from home or overseas and be presented with a very powerful e-mail client inside of their web browser."
- PHP:
- Hastymail "is yet another webmail IMAP client written in PHP. Hastymail is designed for speed, RFC compatibility, simplicity, and security. Our goal is to create a simple interface with powerful but easy to use options that make managing your IMAP account effective and fast."
- IlohaMail is a light-weight yet full-featured multilingual webmail client
written in pure PHP, that is easy to install and use. It supports both
IMAP and POP3, and can be used with or without a database.
- NOCC "is a simple and fast Webmail client which can handle POP3, SMTP, and IMAP servers. It is written with PHP4 (uses sessions), has low requirements (no database, frames). Features multi-language support, MIME attachments, displays HTML messages."
- phpop by Padraic Renaghan -- send/receive for a POP account
- SquirrelMail (SourceForge) " is a PHP4-based Web email client. It includes built-in pure PHP support for IMAP and SMTP, and renders all pages in pure HTML 4.0 (no Javascript) for maximum compatibility across browsers. It also has MIME support, folder manipulation, etc."

- CWMail by NetWin is for businesses.

- Null WebMail
- Postaci by Umut Gokbayrak "(Turkish word for Postman) is a multiplatform GPL' ed webmail software which is database independent (MySQL, mSQL,PostgreSQL, Sybase, MS SQL), multilanguage(Turkish, English...), POP3/IMAP and fully MIME compatible. While using POP3 mode to fetch messages it uses database fields to simulate IMAP folders, on which you can save, move, delete,read e-mail."
- SqWebMail from Inter7 "is a web CGI client for sending and receiving E-mail using Maildir mailboxes. SqWebMail DOES NOT support traditional Mailbox files, only Maildirs. This is the same webmail server that's included in the Courier mail server, but packaged independently. If you already have Courier installed, you do not need to download this version."

- AeroMail by Mark Cushman is an IMAP webmail server written in PHP.
- Alias-mail by Solution Scripts for Linux/Solaris/BSD. Features include address book, filters, signatures, checking external pop accounts, and ICQ notification of new e-mail.
- Coconut WebMail Pro by Coconut Software, a fully integrated enterprise application that provides POP and SMTP server as
well as providing a web interface.
- webBASIS e-mail by webBASIS for Linux.
- Email Server by Advanced Web Solutions. (POP3/SMTP/Web) "AdvWS mail server is a distributed and scalable solution suitable for a business of any size. Mail server offers two deployment options, one with an enterprise database and the other with an embedded database, making it versatile and scalable. - eServer.mail by Technauts is a POP3/IMAP/webmail server for Linux.
- IMP by horde.org is a set of PHP scripts to let people check IMAP accounts.
- InterMail by Software.com (POP3/IMAP/web/SMTP auth SMTP). Note also their WebEdge product which is more suited to branded web-mail.
- MailStudio @Message
- mPOP "is a simple, convenient and robust multi-domain virtual POP3 mail hosting solution. With mPOP any number of domains residing on a single server can be managed with a simple web-based administration tool." POP3/SMTP and webmail.
- Navaho for Linux offers a suite of web applications, including e-mail.
- NetRoamer by Industrial Imagination, Inc.
Novell Internet Messaging System (NIMS) for Linux/Unix by Novell. is a standards-based messaging system supporting SMTP, POP3, IMAP4, SSL, HTML and LDAP. NIMS offers secure data transmission, extensive scalability, reliability and centralized administration. NDS eDirectory integration adds an unprecedented level of manageability and control.. Any client supporting POP3 or IMAP 4 can be used with NIMS in addition to the included Web (HTML) client. NIMS will run on NetWare, Solaris and Linux platforms. NIMS provides extensive anti-spam measures and includes Rules Server and List Server capabilities.
- StarPortal by Sun is a server/browser-based version of their StarOffice suite, including word processing, spreadsheet, mail, news, etc.
- Sun Internet Mail Server from Sun. Supports LDAP, ESMTP, MIME, HTML, IMAP4, POP3, TCP/IP, Notary, and others. Includes Webmail support.
- SuSE eMail Server II from SuSE "is an Open Source solution based on tested, reliable components which comply with Internet standards such as SMTP, IMAP4, POP3, or LDAP. [and webmail] The number of possible e-mail users per server is virtually unlimited and depends only on the server hardware."
- XUbiMail by XandMail. Multi-access carrier-scale HTTP Mail Engine for Telcos, ISPs and Large Portals. A single binary supports access to mailboxes from Web, Wap, iMode, PDAs, Web-enabled TVs, Onboard Terminals, etc. Highly Scalabe and Fully customizable. Runs on Unix and Linux.
Win:
- EasyMail WebAccess by Quiksoft "is a browser independent web-based mail system written in ASP and powered by the EasyMail Objects.Ê Use 'as-is' or modify it to suit your needs."
- emurl by Seattle Lab Software. Their SLIMware product comes with emurl, SLmail internet mail server, and RemoteNT
- GLWebMail by Gordano. Features include filtering, address books, importation of existing mail, multiple personalities, and more.
- IceSuite by CanPub Info Tech, includes a web-based e-mail system.
Unlike many other web-based e-mail systems, IceSuite does not
require you to also run a POP3 mail server.
IceSuite features include a multilingual user interface,
banner advertising, calendaring, and multiple mail domain support.
It runs on Windows NT/2000 server platforms and includes
full ASP source code for easy customization and extension
of the web interface.
- ICE Web Mail by ICE Warp Software has a built-in web and WAP server engine with the Secure Socket Layer (SSL) and supports any charset. Web Mail runs on Windows 2000/NT/9X, supports SMTP/POP3/IMAP4/HTTP protocols and has a spell checker, remote web administration, any attachment support, private and shared address books, groups, signatures, multiple mail server support and many other smart options.
- WebMail from Infinite Technologies for Web, POP3, or IMAP4. SSL.
- IMail Server by Ipswitch for NT/2000. POP3/IMAP4/SMTP and WebMail. (WebMail includes searching folders and draft messages, as well as customizable interface).
- Mail Gateway by Borderware has POP3/IMAP4/SMTP, virus and spam protection, and web access for IMAP accounts.
- MailMax/WEB by SmartMax, for use with their MailMax mail servers.
- MailRelayer makes all your email (and address book) remotely accessible over the Internet. You can share your email with authorized others and read it, reply to it, and file it yourself from anywhere in the world. On your base computer, MailRelayer works with Eudora, Outlook, or Netscape Messenger. When you are away, you can use almost any IMAP compatible mail client (including the three mentioned above) or you can also use a Web browser, a Pocket PC, or a suitably equipped Palm.

- Millenium Office by Seattle Lab Software is a "groupware" type environment but web-based.
- SMTPBeamer by DataEnter is a POP3/SMTP mail server with webmail support as well. Allows for one connection/mailbox at your ISP to collect all mail for your organization.
- VOP Mail by Vircom. POP3/IMAP4/Web/SMTP and lists.
- VPOP3 by Paul Smith Computer Services. POP3 (VPOP3 Enterprise includes IMAP) and SMTP. Web access to mail. Can collect mail for entire domain from one ISP mailbox. Can hold in POP3 (or IMAP4) mailboxes or forward mail to another server.
- WebMail from Infinite Technologies.
- WorldClient by Deerfield.com also includes a web server. The mail portion can be customized to reflect your identity, and works with POP3/SMTP.
- Exchange by Microsoft

- yahMAIL yahMAIL provides a Web interface to native VMS Mail (requires Apache, OSU, Purveyor or WASD servers)
